Taylor Momsen Vibes to Beat of Her Own Drum

Barely17-year-old Taylor Momsen admitted to Disorder magazine that she uses her vibrator to gain pleasure and not a man. This sentence is read by most people as, “16 year old girl owns vibrator thus is evil and villainous.” There are multiple groups that are fighting and arguing the point that this leads to moral depravity and that she is not a role model for young girls.

I have a few opinions on this. In the first place, she admits that her vibrator gives her sexual pleasure without the concern of pregnancy, STI’s, or let’s be honest, heartbreak. Why shouldn’t a 16 year old girl own a vibrator? Is she supposed to be doing what most of us were at 16: hiding her sexuality by sneaking around and not being safe and knowledgeable? Is she supposed to feel ashamed that she has taken her sexuality into her own hands and decided that she doesn’t need a boy, isn’t gay, and wants to find pleasure?
WIndowSecondly, I don’t know who Taylor Momsen is from Taylor Swift or Jonathan Taylor Thomas or what effect she has on young girls. I do know that she is a typical Hollywood tweenlette that made her fame on the hit show Gossip Girl. Again I never saw it. What I do know is that the words “wholesome family values” are not the first to come to mind when I think of the show. I tend to think spoiled, rich teenagers who connive and cheat to hurt one another. If those are the values that we are already teaching the youth today…then let them learn how to give themselves pleasure in a way that does not harm anyone around them.
