Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Tomboy

Apparently Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, the biological baby of uber-good looking couple Brand and Angelina is a full throttle tomboy. Recent stories have covered her demands for a short haircut, her pleasure in a good pair of boots, her preference for swords over princess-wear, and her choice of boy’s swim trunks.

Fortunately for Shiloh, Angelina is letting her express herself. “It’s not my choice. I have a very strong-willed four-year-old girl, who tells me what she wants to wear and I let her be who she is,” said Angelina Jolie to US Magazine. As Jezebel points out, the gossip mags (and blogs) have not all been kind to Angelina about this.

But over here in Babeland, I give her a big two thumbs up. Supporting our kids in becoming who they are is our job as parents. And that includes gender expression.

I hope Angelina and Brad are inspiring to the many parents out there whose kids aren’t turning out to be the girly-girls or manly boys they may have expected.  My quick search on “my kid is a tomboy” has given me a queasy feeling. The results are rife with “she was a tomboy for a while, but she turned out OK” stories. Yikes! Guess what? People are turning out OK when they reach their potential as human beings and help make the world a better place, not when their gender and genitals align.

Angelina’s main gig these days is as a UN Goodwill Ambassador. But it looks like she may have a sideline representing gender positive parenting to a Barbie and Ken world.

Excellent article. I’ve seen the not-so-kind tabloids in line at the grocery store on this particular topic and it made my stomach drop a little. Cheers to people becoming “OK” — whatever that looks like to them … functional, happy, loving, loved, growing, expanding, breathing beings, due to the support of their families (both blood and not) and communities.
